There are no beach shacks or beach hawkers here, just you and the local fishing community and we really hope it stays this way, because this is one of the few places left that has been untouched by commercialised tourism and still offers a tremendous insight into the local culture and lifestyle. The beach is stunning, however the sea can often have strong undercurrents and is not always suitable for swimming; most people tend to take a stroll along the shoreline, paddling in the shallow waters.
Marari appeals to the discerning traveller who wants quality, comfort and service without the usual tourist trappings — a place where you can really experience the local charm and traditional Keralan hospitality at its best. Not that you need be isolated here, for you are in the best location to explore the amazing backwaters by traditional rice boat, a truly fantastic experience where, from the tranquillity of the deck of your boat, you can see so many facets of local life, whether it be bathing in the river, doing the weekly wash, transporting goods or fishing — there is a different scene ready to unfold around every corner. For a day away from peace and tranquillity a visit to Cochin, one of the most important trade centres on the 'spice coast', is a must. Here you can still see the influences left behind by past visitors; the Chinese fishing nets, Jew Town with its elaborate synagogue, spice trading houses, old antique shops, St Francis' Church and the Dutch Palace. Meanwhile back at Marari as the sun goes down the most taxing thing you will have to do is walk to the restaurant where you can enjoy a leisurely dinner, followed by a couple of drinks at the Club House Bar, serenaded by soft music. There's even a dance floor under the stars for the romantically inclined — a perfect end to a perfect day!
