Kovalam
is Kerala’s most popular and widely publicised beach destination
and yet it is still based on a solid foundation of village life.
Tourism has never really taken off here although it has been on the
map of many a traveller discovering the delights of this amazing
part of the world. As you enter the resort from the top main road
which links to Trivandrum, the Capital, there are many little shops
to cater to most needs. This is where the post office, bank, chemists
and general stores can be found before heading down one of the fairly
steep roads to the beach and surrounding accommodations. |

Kovalam is divided by its many bays and there are so many
beaches to choose from as the landscape has formed sandy
crescents with headlands to each end, the most popular being
the Lighthouse Beach, the working red and white lighthouse a
major lifeline for the local fishing population. Many an hour
can be spent watching the fishermen launching their dug-out
boats, casting their nets, lights glowing on the horizon in the
dark of night, and the chanting that accompanies their
teamwork as the morning catch is excitedly hauled in from the
beach.
The resort itself is fairly small
with a maze of alleyways just behind the beachfront properties linking
local shops, guesthouses and restaurants beneath the coconut palms. These
pathways, located behind the Hawa and Lighthouse beaches,
are used to access all facilities quickly and easily; money
exchange, e-mail, toiletries, local bargains, hot and cold drinks
and a variety of eating places.
A wander through the shaded
walkways in the morning is an excellent way to start the day as
locals call out their friendly greetings; you are now a
recognised, welcome member of their community!
In contrast to the hustle and bustle of buying and selling in the
day, this is not the place to visit if in search of a hectic nightlife.
Better-suited to those who prefer to enjoy a great meal amongst
great company, the relaxed atmosphere in Kovalam makes it
easy to socialise and with a choice of 30 or so eating places you will be spoilt!
A few are specialist restaurants, for example Italian and vegetarian, whilst
most have a full range of multi-cuisines, with fresh fish on display to attract
custom.
As you wander along the beach at
night (remember to take a torch with you!), it is not uncommon to hear
the waiter tempting you with "cold beer, gin and tonic". Some
of the best restaurants, tried and tested by the Jewel in the Crown team,
are on the beach itself.
